Geno not coaching UConn vs. FSU due to illness

UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma is missing the Huskies’ Sunday afternoon game against Florida State after he began feeling unwell after morning shootaround, the program said.

Out of abundance of caution, UConn said shortly before tip, he is not with the team for the contest.

Associate head coach Chris Dailey is serving as head coach in his stead; Dailey is 13-0 as acting head coach.

The Huskies (7-2) have had a bad run of injury and illness luck to start the 2022-23 season; in addition to 2020-21 national player of the year Paige Bueckers (ACL tear) and freshman Ice Brady (dislocated patella) being ruled out for the season, four other players have missed time through nine games. While graduate student Dorka Juhász and junior Nika Mühl are expected back Sunday after missing seven games and one game, respectively, sophomore Azzi Fudd, who was an early player of the year candidate, remains sidelined with a right knee injury.

Last month, there was also a scare when Dailey collapsed on the court just prior to UConn’s game versus NC State. The school said she underwent tests that afternoon at a local hospital and was released shortly after.

Auriemma’s mother died on Dec. 8; he coached versus Princeton that evening and then the following Sunday at Maryland.
